Seeing a therapist can be a great way to support your mental health and improve your ability to cope with life’s difficulties. But finding a therapist who meets your needs can be challenging, whether you’re starting therapy for the first time or looking for a new provider. Between navigating insurance, sorting through profiles, and figuring out what kind of support you need, the search itself can feel like a full-time job. This process can be especially tough to navigate if you’re already struggling.
Here’s some good news: If you’ve already decided to go to therapy, you’ve already accomplished the most important (and hardest) step. The next step is finding someone who feels like the right fit — and while that can take time, it doesn’t have to be overwhelming, especially if you know what to look for.
Below, learn more about how to find a therapist and how to determine if a provider is the right fit for you.
Supply and demand is one of the most common roadblocks on the journey of finding a therapist. Demand for mental healthcare is high, and many providers are busy or not accepting new clients. It’s like trying to get a table at a popular restaurant on a Friday night: Lots of people are looking, spots fill up fast, and you might have to wait longer than you planned.
Then, there’s the issue of finding the best provider for your needs. Any therapist can apply evidence-based techniques, but that doesn’t mean they’ll be right for you. The quality of the therapeutic relationship — how safe, seen, and understood you feel in sessions — is one of the biggest predictors of meaningful progress. Your therapist should feel like a safe space where you can be vulnerable as you share your thoughts and emotions and take sometimes challenging steps toward growth and change.
It can be hard to know whether you mesh with a therapist until you meet them a few times. Once you get on a provider’s schedule, you may end up deciding you’d prefer a different approach, and that’s OK. All of this is a normal, albeit frustrating, part of the process — and why it can help so much to be clear about your priorities ahead of time. That way, when a potentially good fit opens up, you’re ready to book an appointment.
Finding a good therapist is both a science and an art: You can follow a few helpful steps to get you on the right track, but ultimately, you’ll need to rely on your intuition to determine whether a provider is the best possible fit for supporting you on your mental health needs.
Before reaching out to a potential therapist, take some time to think about what you hope to get out of therapy. What are your main struggles, and what kind of support do you respond best to? Do you want a therapist who’s trained to work with certain populations (like college students or BIPOC people) or specific treatment approaches (like cognitive behavioral therapy or EMDR)? Deciding what you’re looking for can help narrow down your options and make the search feel less overwhelming.
Next, it can help to think about the logistics of therapy. If you have insurance and want to use it for therapy sessions, make sure potential therapists are in-network for your plan (calling the number on the back of your card can help if you’re not sure). Consider your availability, too: Do you need a therapist who has evening availability because you work or go to school during the day? Do you prefer a provider who sees clients in person, virtually, or a mix of both? Looking into these things up front can save you time on your search.
Many insurance providers have lists of in-network therapists. Online therapy directories are also a great place to search for a provider using filters for your location, availability, preferred treatment modality, and insurance plan. On Headway’s therapist directory, you can simply enter your insurance plan and preferences to find therapists who are in-network for your plan and taking new clients, which can save you both time and guesswork.
Once you’ve narrowed down your list of options, carve out time to carefully read through therapist bios and profiles, referencing your list of needs and preferences in the process. Look for clear mention of the issues they work with — like anxiety, trauma, relationships, identity, or life transitions. How a therapist communicates in writing can also tell you a lot. Do they sound warm? Direct? Clinical? Supportive? Choose someone whose tone feels inviting and aligns with how you want to be supported.
Most therapists offer free introductory sessions where you can ask questions, share your needs, and get a feel of how you’d work together. Think of this consultation as an interview where you can figure out whether a therapist is right for you.
You may be able to tell right away whether someone is a fit — but it can help to be prepared with a few questions, such as:
If you feel like the therapist is a good fit, great! You can move forward with scheduling if the therapist has immediate openings. If you need more time to decide, it’s OK to tell the therapist you’re actively searching and will reach back out if you want to book a session.
